Susanne Auslender
Susanne Auslender, born in Saarbrücken in 1964, studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich after a two-year stay in Brazil. Susanne Auslender has made the figurative the subject of her art from the very beginning. One of the focal points of her work is devoted to depictions of flowers. In many variations, the delicate organic natural product flower is created from rough-sawn wood.
Each flower in itself becomes a formal event. From cubic wooden pedestals, stems and leaves grow so closely together, color tone in tone, that the compact materiality of the wood only thins out near the flower. Other flowers stand freely on the pedestal and seem to tumble despite any solidity.
Sometimes one has the impression that we are dealing here with dance-like studies of movement, the order of which is repeatedly irritated by individual deviations.
The electric saw peels these vital figures out of very different woods such as cedar, plum, oak, yew or robinia. Tension is created on the one hand by the material-space relationship, and on the other by the dialectic of difficult processing and lightness of appearance.
In addition, the color energies of a red-purple painting or a blue-green contrast create a dynamic all of their own.
Susanne Auslender tells us through the flower that themes that have been tried and tested in art history can certainly be reprocessed, both in terms of form and content.
In 2006 she received the sculpture prize of the Villa Mohr in Munich. She participated in numerous sculpture symposia and showed her works in various exhibitions, at international fairs and in public spaces, such as in Stockstadt am Rhein, the Orangerie Darmstadt, the Skulpturenpark Hamburg and the Bansapark Neu-Isenburg.
