The stacking of everyday things in Mirko Schallenberg’s works – the so-called thing pyramids – is striking. The artist creates works that raise many questions. In his paintings you can find rocks, food, books, honeycombs, glasses, vases – objects that are not usually associated with each other. Nevertheless, through the arrangement, the artist manages to create a harmonious relationship between things.
Mirko Schallenberg was born in Northeim, studied in the early nineties at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig and was a master student of Professor Hermann Albert. In the meantime, he himself teaches at the Academy of Painting in Berlin.
The artist brings calm to the chaos of things. Even if the arrangement appears fragile, the construction of the depicted objects radiates a certain steadfastness. He brings the arrangement of objects together through painterly means so that they form a harmonious pyramid of things.
The various things are depicted enlarged – thus their rank is increased, because in the virtual age the objects lose their presence. In our technologically-sophisticated society, objects have evolved into abstract signs. The artist processes the question of being in his works.
Through the muted colors, things come to rest and exert a meditative effect on the viewer. Both the background and the objects in the foreground are designed by the artist in restrained and matte colors, which combines to create a peaceful overall work.
Lines, surface structures and textures, material and consistency, enlargements and proportions, statics and dynamics, metaphysics, thingness and color play a supporting role in the works.
Mirko Schallenberg tames chaos by painting and opens new doors of imagination that lead us into worlds beyond. The viewer should enter and find himself in the constellation of objects.
