PICTURES ON WINDOWS

Jürgen Durner has been working with window paintings since 1992. Mirrored glass panes are at the center of his work as a representational horizon. The superimposition of the visible, spatial events by means of mirror films of the reflecting glass panes plays an important role. The potentiated reality of the superimposed figurativeness allows the artist to realize an irritating condensation of the everyday, urban world of appearance in a painterly way.

The “normal gaze” penetrates directionally through the thicket of visual obstacles to the desired object. Durners gaze, on the other hand, remains strangely objective and neutral to the totality of all appearances.

Seemingly banal things are combined with accessories, modern design, often vertical architectural elements and extreme lighting situations, intertwined. In the process, light, especially the artificial light of night, becomes the leading vehicle of expression.
Durner turns the normal gaze upside down and focuses in detail with precision and craftsmanship on a specific section of the coexistence of all things. His gaze is obsessively enigmatic. He lives from the conviction that every surface is a result of reflection.

We are thereby presented with an amazingly virtual world that we somehow know and remember, yet have never seen in this way before. The impression of simultaneities of various events and structural patterns of movement manifests this pictorial world, which provides many stimuli as a playing field for sophisticated painting. The paintings span between abstract, planar spatial planes and rhythmicized textures. Walls become transparent, plays of light appear in deep shadow, other things emerge behind things. A strong evaluation of luminous primary colors is in the foreground, which often appear very transparent and finely glazed.

We thus perceive a poetization and aestheticization of our gray everyday world, which we may well perceive as an enrichment of beauty.
