ARTIST
Joanna Skurska
Joanna Skurska was born in 1972 in Gdansk, where she studied Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts under Hugon Lasecki from 1994 through to 1999. She completed her studies with a Diploma in 1999.
Even as a teenager she had been passionate about art and had attended a drawing course, where she met the man who would become her husband. Later she studied painting and textile art. “As an artist you have to develop your own language and your own style,” Skurska believes. She used the time of her studies to try out different materials and techniques.
Joanna Skurska drafts and shapes her objects using copper or silver wire, creating delicate and transparent busts, which are mostly female and in which she accentuates the figure. They are at the same time discarnate and very bodily. These are sculptures that exist in the field of tension between fine and applied art, between art object and wearable art.
Alongside the sculptures, Skurska works on paintings in oil and acrylic on wood. Her pieces are inspired by nature and leave a great deal of room for the viewer’s own thoughts and interpretations: stems, blades of grass, leaves and flowers form the basis of her works. They trail through her paintings individually or in small groups without ever taking up the entirety of the pictorial space. On a ground of earthy hues, the artist also plays with strong, intense colors such as electric blue, poppy red or opal green.
Her delicate and fragile plants appear to be floating without being held down by roots. Nothing points to their life cycle: Are they blossoming, growing, or withering? They appear as though out of thin air in order to feel their way through the painting in slow and careful movements, as though carried by a light breeze.
