ARTIST

Jiří Vincenc Slavíček

Jiří Vincenc Slavíček fled in 1978 at the age of 23 from his native Prague to the Federal Republic of Germany, where he studied from 1980 to 1986 at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (Städelschule) in Frankfurt with Prof. Raimer Jochims. The early paintings were characterized by figurative as well as politically critical elements. In 1989 after the aesthetic upheaval of his work, his painting became more abstract.

Slavíček sees what a scenery reveals about nature and reproduces this with much artistic reflection in his work. Thus, from detached and representational components, emotionally expressive paintings of flowers, forests and grasses are created.

In many of his works, the painter works with the technique of oil painting cut, in which he partially removes the top layer of oil to make the underlying hidden visible. In this way he creates a plastic presence within his paintings. For Slavíček is precisely concerned with making the seemingly hidden and graceful of nature vivid for every viewer.

As PhDr. I. Naumann also said, Slavíček’s path is exclusively that of a painter. He likes to work with all the finesses available to a painter, but he never lets them carry him away. The two dimensions of a painting expand into two more under his hands, without using the technique of illusion painting. This is how he is able to paint “Space and Time” (1999). This is due to the fact that he does not imitate the nature of a landscape, which means the strongest experience for him, but moves in harmony with it, in the midst of its greatest creative capacity and existence.

The Barbara von Stechow Gallery and the artist are united by a collaboration that has now lasted 15 years.
