Helle Jetzig

Top View | by Stephanie Hentschel

Skyscrapers, sacred buildings, streets, billboards, bridges, harbors and squares wrapped in bright, almost garish colors, partially covered by dots, figurative picture elements or lettering. Some of the places seem familiar from one’s own travels or visits to cities, and yet the scenery seems foreign. One is inclined to rub one’s eyes in order to better grasp what one sees. But the dots and colors do not disappear, nor do the buildings arrange themselves into their usual view. Nevertheless, our eye tries to immediately grasp what is happening in the image. It is trained to detect linear structures and regularities, to perceive moods and to transfer them into an overall concept.

It is a penetrating play of color and form that awaits us when we look at Helle Jetzig’s works. Beyond the glossy surfaces, it draws us into the picture and offers us new, visual horizons of experience and perception. It seems as if, despite familiar motifs, a completely new and fascinating world opens up before our eyes. Surreal and yet harmonious appears to us the seemingly abstract dialogue of form and color, which Helle Jetzig works out of figurative image sections and captures in various formats on wooden boxes.
Photographs that the artist captures with his camera on many trips form the basis for these expressive and equally technically unique works. Assembled into new structures and free compositions, they are removed from reality. The following painting serves as a purposeful as well as accidental means to create moods and at the same time to experiment with the possibilities and limits of the material. For the viewer, it seems difficult to distinguish what is taken from reality and which elements are created by the artist’s manipulation. The individual components of the picture plane shift into one another, while at the same time the different picture planes seem to melt together in depth.
With the invention of photography in the 19th century and its artistic use, rivalry with painting arose at the same time. A competition between the two arts developed, designed to surpass the other medium in its closeness to reality. The photographers tried to imitate the moods conveyed by painting by choosing special image details, perspectives and forms of lighting. The painters, on the other hand, used the perspective and compositional possibilities of photography as well as the spontaneously chosen image detail, which gave their works the effect of an immediate snapshot.
Similar to many artists of the 19th century, Helle Jetzig uses the possibilities of photography to give free rein to his painterly inspirations and ideas. In no way is there any conflict or competition between the two media. Rather, they enter into a harmonious connection, a unanimous dialogue that creates tension and dynamics in the image construction in an innovative way.
The structural task seems to lie in the photography. The photographs taken on many trips through the metropolises of Europe and the USA serve as source material, as a kind of material for Helle Jetzig’s art. In elaborate steps, individual clippings are assembled into collages in black and white in the artist’s studio, superimposed or optically altered by positive and negative processes. Not least because of today’s wide spectrum of digital processing possibilities, the artist has been given entirely new and exciting means of influencing the image structure and composition.
The compositional perspectives and forms, shadings and lines that result from the photographic motifs themselves, but also from the artist’s manipulation, serve as a foundation on which painting can fully unfold.
Printed as a lamda print rather than on baryta paper, the photographic basis also offers new creative possibilities for painting. Whereas the paper used by Helle Jetzig in the past absorbed the color immediately, the new material prevents the color pigments from being absorbed directly, thus allowing spontaneous blurring and smudging by the artist. This results in unexpected color fields, edges and color accumulations that create spontaneous forms, lines and surfaces in the individual works, which form a striking formal contrast to the constructed collages. Primarily it is the primary colors red, yellow and blue with which the artist paints the photographs.

Here, too, he makes use of the possibilities offered by the new material and allows the colors to run into each other without any specific ideas. Repetition and variation are also among Jetzig’s stylistic devices.
Through forms that the artist takes from the respective image sections and projects them onto the surface of the image by means of screen printing, he creates an optical balance between the individual image layers. Frequently to be found here is the form of the circle or dot, which the artist associates with coordinates. Both in the silkscreen and in the individual image collages, created by the alternation of positive and negative or image incisions, these dots can also be mentally connected to further geometric forms.
The evidenced fascination for the possibilities of experimenting with form and color on the surface is the driving source for the creation of these color-intensive, almost pulsating works. At the same time, however, the fundamental design elements that define the artistic medium of painting can be found here, and which make it clear why Helle Jetzig sees himself primarily as a painter.
The choice of photographic motifs, which are mostly different urban buildings, street canyons and squares, is made purely according to formal criteria. Symmetries, diagonals as well as horizontals and geometric forms resulting from advertising posters, house walls, buildings, street signs or from the arrangement of people seem to be decisive for the inspiration for new image compositions.
The artist titles his latest series Top View. In the same way that his works allow for various directions of view, the designation Top View also allows for different readings and refers not only to the group of works so named, for which Helle Jetzig has chosen the view from above for the first time. The bird’s-eye view opens up a new, surprising field of vision for the viewer. People, architecture, and places are captured from above, thus explicitly relegating the viewer to the role of observer.
The positive and negative constructions, which can be found as recurring pictorial elements in Helle Jetzig’s new works, also create entirely new lighting effects. Like spotlights, they bring certain areas of the composition to the fore and leave others in shadow. In these new works, too, it is a constant alternation of form and color, shadow and light, proximity and distance, surface and three-dimensionality, which transform the figurative basic motifs of the photographs into illusionistic views through expressive-abstract color gradients.
A large part of the artistic result already lies in the elaborate process of creation, the addition of layer upon layer of the individual pictorial elements, from photography to painting and screen printing to the final sealing with various layers of varnish. No completed idea serves as the starting point for his compositions. Rather, the spontaneous process of making leads the artist to the completion of his works.
However, it is not only in the play of form and color that the tension in Helle Jetzig’s works is maintained. The resulting duality between spontaneity and planning, reality and illusion, perception and reality also creates new worlds of experience for the viewer. In keeping with the name Top View, it is the visual view of things that moves the artist and which he tries to convey to the viewer in his paintings.
Starting from motifs taken from everyday cityscapes, the artist creates completely new, seemingly abstract visual worlds through the renewed use of shapes and lines, as well as through the targeted and random use of color, which challenge the eye of the viewer again and again to review his perception and the usual perspective.
