ARTIST
Wulf Winckelmann
Wide sky above low drawn horizon seems endless. Huge cloud masses in the firmament. The sea, the meadows, fields and waters are left only a narrow strip at the bottom of the broad image.
The contrast between the lavish scenario of the sky and the landscape below, perceivable as if through a veil, is the basic tension of these horizontally oriented picture formats. Not only compositionally, however, the horizon becomes, as it were, the tipping point. For Winckelmann, it refers even more to something that is behind the visible.
His large-format pictures, painted impasto with acrylic paint, pigments, and inks using a palette knife and brush, open up from the constant search for and question of “whether something and what can be perceived beyond the visible”.
The horizon becomes, as it were, a demarcation line on which the painter’s hand gropes for orientation and certainty. Wulf Winckelmann interprets and understands the horizon not as a separation, as a limitation, but as an invitation and a summons. When he paints a landscape, he does so in order to condense and intensify the effect of what he has seen in the process of remembering. In this moment of remembering, coupled with a different way of dealing with time, Winckelmann sees the essential difference between painting and photography, which condition each other and emerge from each other in his oeuvre as a whole.
