Walter Schembs
Walter Schembs was born in Worms in 1956. Inspired by his training as a carpenter and furniture restorer, he began wood sculpting in 1985. His connection to nature and the will to be creative encouraged his path to being an artist. He is co-founder of the art triennial Blickachse Worms and received the art award of the city of Walldorf in 2005.
The human figure is at the center of his sculptural oeuvre. On the basis of the human body form, Walter Schembs creates typified and yet individual figures, whose faces he gives a character all their own.
Spontaneously, without making a preliminary drawing, the wood is worked by the artist. The roughly hewn surfaces of the sculptures convey a kind of primordiality and at the same time the artist’s passion for the material. Especially the wood of oak is used by Walter Schembs again and again, precisely because its special grain and structure gives the surfaces each time an unexpected and exciting expression.
Since 1998 Walter Schembs has also had bronzes cast in order to be able to place his sculptures outdoors. In doing so, he transfers the structure and grain of the wood into the bronze surface, thus achieving a fascinating haptic perception of the material surface. The viewer is inclined to touch the sculpture in order to be able to grasp the actual material.
Many of his works are in public spaces, including Finland, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg.
