The art of simplicity – Can silence be staged?

Everyday objects can be found in Paul Mathey’s paintings – a vase, fruits,
a glass, usually on a plain background. Through the stage-like staging, the spatiality is deliberately suspended and the focus is directed to the object. These are trivialities, things that one encounters every day, to which one otherwise pays little attention. Taken out of their conventional context, they now form the main motifs of the representation. With precise observation he reproduces what he sees. In doing so, Paul Mathey proceeds with a meticulous thoroughness whose product is impressive in its realism. One finds no narrative, no expectation, no intensity – only the objects we encounter in their simplicity.

We are thrown back on the close observation and can let our eyes rest on one thing without already being distracted by the next. No overloading, only the enjoyment of the moment. The beauty of the current moment can be experienced through this. In their simplicity, the objects represent vehicles,
which put us in a contemplative state. We are exclusively thrown back on our personal sensation.
In his works, Paul Mathey stages a moment of pause and silence.
