Julia Jansen

Every time we look at a painting by Julia Jansen, we can observe ourselves as ‘seeing’, but perhaps equally as ‘deceived’. The latest works of the 2022 series of “Tropics & Figures” already refer in the title to something not clearly defined. With the tropics is meant here more than a climatic zone, because at most the backgrounds refer to it. What is meant here is the tropus (also the trope, plural tropes), which in rhetoric is an umbrella term for certain classes of rhetorical figures, i.e. stylistic devices. Thus, the figures shown are allegories, such as “the noble lie,” “the fact,” “the compromise,” etc.
The figures stand on a second level in front of the background, which depicts palm trees, beach and sea. In addition, the artist combines small-format images of colorful birds: Parrots and budgies.

Of course, the motifs of the pictures all come from reality, but here reality points to something doubtful. This silent world, where everything is almost natural, where one should not ask too many questions, obviously comes rather from the half-world of dreams. The subtle imbalance of the images is achieved with very few details. Did we see this half dream or dream this seen? The fictional seems as real as the factual here. Reality is perhaps more a mixture of the two after all. A picture, in order to be a picture, must show something on its surface that is not present at that point itself.

Every picture is thus a visible contradiction of presence and absence. The painting of Julia Jansen, however, is present and present. It offers itself to the looking eye and provides a sense that only images can communicate. This arises from the visibility of the image and therefore concerns the visual perceptive faculty of man. The peculiar fascination of Julia Jansen’s paintings perhaps stems from the fact that they are about seeing itself. Her paintings are of course material, but at the same time they are dematerializations that transform an object into pure visibility.
