ARTIST
Joe Stefanelli
The artist Joe Stefanelli, who died in 2017, belonged, like the representatives Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning, to the Abstract Expressionism of the New York School. This art movement entered the art world with its legendary innovations in the 1940s and 1950s, and for the first time gave New York the status of a leading international art metropolis. Joe Stefanelli was born in Philadelphia in 1921.
After studying at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Joe Stefanelli worked as a war draftsman in the service of the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946.
His first experience with avant-garde ideas within the art scene came in 1947, when he joined Hans Hofmann’s School of Fine Arts in New York City. The latter’s art school, opened in 1934, exerted a great influence on the young painters of the New York School.
In 1950, the two important art critics Meyer Shapiro and Clement Greenberg selected works by Stefanelli for their “New Talent Show” at the Kootz Gallery in New York. A short time later, Franz Kline invited Joe Stefanelli to participate in the legendary “9th Street Show,” whose opening in May 1951 by Leo Castelli can be considered the official birth of Abstract Expressionism. For Stefanelli this meant the introduction into the circle of those famous Abstract Expressionists and the beginning of his artistic career.
John Russell, art critic of the New York Times, wrote in one of his articles about the artist:
“Joe Stefanelli is considered one of the leading lights of the New York School. He is an outstanding artist who is not easy to classify. He blends the broad sweep of the color-laden brush with a strong, straight line (which might be associated with the
handle of the brush is drawn) contrast. He is convincing on that dangerous ground where red and purple meet, and he manages to unite pink and light blue in a way that has been forgotten since Raoul Dufy died. He has a clear repertoire of shapes – circle, triangle, rectangle – and he can make it do somersaults all over the canvas.”
Joe Stefanelli held various teaching positions from 1960 to 1979, including at the University of California, Princeton University, New York University, Columbia University, Brooklyn College, and Temple University in Rome.
His work is represented in numerous museums and collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Chase Manhattan Bank Collection, the Walker Art Institute, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery, the Albright Museum, and the Walter P. Chrysler Collection. His work has also been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art. In Germany, the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz presented a retrospective in 2006.
In 2000, Joe Stefanelli was awarded the New York Krasner-Pollock Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2005 he received the Benjamin Altman Prize for painting from the National Academy Museum.
