Gert Rappenecker
Gert Rappenecker lives and works in Zurich. For years he has repeatedly made use of different media. His works revolve around the questions of how real reality is and how artificial artificiality appears. Thematically, it is about nothing less than the great longings and dreams of people.
LANDSCAPES are places of longing, or yet of fears? Gert Rappenecker also seduces the viewer with his landscape paintings. Masterfully painted and strictly composed are the pictures. A view of a spruce forest could refer to a romantic walk, but would one find one’s way out of it? Rappenecker’s landscapes are, like his well-known mountain landscapes, on the one hand “places of longing”. Illusionistically painted beautiful places seduce to dream. Bright zones in the dark lure the gaze into the depths of the pictorial space, only to slow it down in turn. The viewer is reminded that he himself actually constructs each image, with his knowledge and emotions, his desires and projections.
For the CAR PAINTINGS series, the painting surfaces were made larger and moved from the easel to the floor. The sheer size of his works makes the viewer pause and marvel in the face of overwhelming layers of spectacular shapes and colors. Rappenecker allows the paint to drip and flow onto the metal backgrounds, he pours and sprinkles, creating structures, rhythms and patterns of paint splashes and flows. The unconscious is visualized, and the paint is not even applied with a brush. Rappenecker also uses unconventional materials in his choice of painting medium: car paint.
