Edite Grinberga
Edite Grinberga was born in 1965 in Riga, Latvia. From 1975 to 1982 she studied at the Janis Rozentals Art School and from 1983 painting and textile design at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Riga. Following her studies, she initially worked as a freelance artist in Riga.
Following her studies, she first worked as a freelance artist in Riga. Since 1990 she has lived and worked in Berlin. In 2011 she spent time at the Santa Fe Art Institute in New Mexico, USA, as part of a fellowship.
In her interior depictions and still lifes, Edite Grinberga uses representational hyperrealism and minimalist reduction to create quiet moments that tell of different journeys and transience. The play of light and shadow is especially important in Grinberga’s works. The only seemingly random incidence of light is part of the meticulously planned composition. Everyday objects, such as a chair, a book, or a piece of clothing, are arranged in the almost empty rooms or on individual pieces of furniture, such as a chest of drawers and a bed, in the tradition of 17th-century Dutch interior painting and yet in a completely modern way. In this way, small, exciting stories are created in the viewer’s imagination. For example, a passport on a bed tells of hotel rooms and experiences in foreign places,
or an opened suitcase in an empty room provides mysterious clues to the life of an unknown person.
In some paintings, fabric panels create a fascinating dynamic, despite the conveyed stillness. In some works, the artist creates art historical references, such as to the works of Vermeer, through intericonicity, the “picture-within-a-picture.” In this way, Grinberga integrates images of people into her works, which tell of times past and the beauty of the moment.
The artist’s works have been shown in various solo and group exhibitions. In 2008, some of her paintings were shown in an exhibition at the Museum im Waldemarturm in Dannenberg-Elbe. In 2013, her works were on display at the Kunstkreis Hameln, the Kunstverein Schöningen and the Kunstverein zu Hohenaschau, among others.
Her works can be found in numerous private and public collections, such as the State Art Fund Latvia.
