ARTIST

Christof Paul

Christof Paul was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1975 and studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. Since 2002 he has been working as a freelance artist and sculptor. He works his human figures precisely and in detail out of different woods, always trying to convey a certain liveliness.

Christof Paul always gives his figures something special. He works with a lot of patience, with dedication, with an eye for detail. His figures radiate liveliness. Whether through their posture, a look or a gesture. Under this guiding principle “Each person is special and unique” the artist creates in his studio in Bad Vilbel with much love and dedication always new figures.

Whether through the suggestion of gestural movements or the addition of objects and animal figures that create small scenes, he gives his sculptures a narrative look that gives the impression of dynamism.

In doing so, the artist has his own unique way of working: For figures over 50 cm in size, the sculptor takes the chainsaw to help.

He works on smaller figures with a Japanese hand saw. Once the basic form is found, the elaboration follows with traditional carving tools. The surfaces of the figures always show traces of the origin. A deliberately rough treatment, for example, distinguishes the clothing from the finely worked body parts and faces. Christof Paul uses different materials. For interiors, he uses wood species such as lime, walnut and cedar. Durable oak wood is suitable for exteriors. Christof Paul’s figures often find their place in public spaces. The size of the works ranges from about 40 cm to 320 cm for his largest figure to date, “Freeman”.

Christof Paul has already been awarded the prize of the Danner Foundation and the Culture Prize of the Frankfurter Volksbank.
