ARTIST INFO
Josef Fischnaller
Josef Fischnaller, photographer and photo artist, was born in Austria in 1964. Influenced by his father, Josef Fischnaller, a well-known painter from Linz, discovered his interest for art at an early age, especially for painting.
It was only a few years later that Fischnaller discovered the medium of photography for himself. Accompanied by a fascination for photography, Fischnaller decides to train as a photographer in Vienna in 1982, which he completes in 1986. Only one year later he already opened his first own studio in Vienna. Numerous exhibitions follow in Berlin, Vienna, Miami, New York and Moscow. In 2000 he decides to move his center of life from Vienna in Austria to Berlin, where he still lives and works today.
Josef Fischnaller has already received a number of well-known prizes and awards, including the Kappa Korea Award or the EFFIES in gold and silver for Mastercard.
Fascinated by the works of the old masters, especially Caravaggio and Velázquez, Josef Fischnaller begins to stage his works through the medium of photography in such a way that he creates a balance between classical composition and modern staffage.
Not at least the splendid costumes from Renaissance times falsify the faces of today’s well-known personalities such as Andrea Sawatzki or Hannelore Elsner. Even the one or other detail, which does not quite correspond to past times, creates irritation and symbiosis at the same time.
Josef Fischnaller dares to try to translate the classical iconography of portraits and still lifes into today’s time. The notion and desire for the attention to detail, the use of light and shadow, and the exploration of space, and form, as he knew it from Caravaggio and Velàzquez, are thus transformed into the time of the 21st century. One could also say that Josef Fischnaller photographs as the old masters painted. The obvious irritation thus sharpens the viewer’s perception and makes visible.
