Rhea Standke

Rhea Standke, born in Dresden in 1972, has developed a distinctive painterly practice rooted in an intensive engagement with both the microcosm and the macrocosm, deliberately challenging conventional modes of seeing and perception. She began her artistic training at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe (1996–2002), studying under Peter Dreher, Ernst Caramelle, and Günther Umberg, where she earned her diploma in Fine Arts in 2002. She subsequently continued her studies from 2002 to 2006 at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Wolfgang Herzig and Johanna Kandl.

A formative experience came in 2004, when she participated in an artist-in-residence program in China, working in Qingdao, Beijing, and Hangzhou, and also teaching at Dalian University.

Further stages in her artistic development include studies at the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti in Turin (2008) and an exchange program at the University of Arts and Design in Cluj-Napoca (2009). From 2010 to 2016, she studied Fine Art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Herbert Brandl, who named her his Meisterschülerin (master student) in 2015; she received her academy certificate there in 2016. In 2017, she pursued additional studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the class of Ashley Hans Scheirl.

Building on this extensive training, Standke has developed a body of work that originates in intricate floral microstructures, transforming them into baroque, almost ecstatic formations. Her paintings convert organic forms into autonomous, timeless pictorial spaces in which multiple layers of reality and temporality intersect. Through complex color layering and nuanced contrasts of light and shadow, she creates richly illusionistic landscapes that oscillate between flatness and spatial depth.

The floral point of departure remains only as a trace, giving way to surreal, charged visual worlds that shift the viewer’s attention away from subject matter and toward the act of perception itself. Central to her work is the idea of a present, timeless moment in which a cosmic order unfolds—a state without beginning or end, suspending linear time.

Standke’s work was awarded the EADS Art Prize in 2002 under the patronage of Otto Schily. Her works are held, among others, in the collection of the Karlsruhe Regional Council. She has also completed a commissioned portrait of Rector B. Stöckle for the University of Freiburg, as well as works for the Cultural Office of the City of Willich.
