Ehemann
Before turning to the visual arts, Johannes Ehemann – born in 1996 and now based in Wiesbaden – was active as a professional ice hockey player. This athletic background continues to shape his understanding of discipline, momentum, and personal growth. At the same time, his intense experience in team sports led him to recognize how essential individual forms of expression are to one’s overall well-being.
Ehemann’s artistic practice makes clear that traditional pictorial formats are insufficient for his creative ambitions. In a deliberate departure from conventional constraints, he has developed his own supports and techniques, allowing for a greater degree of expressive freedom. His works do not adhere to fixed rules; rather, they are defined by an ongoing process of questioning, discarding, and reinvention.
Influences from fashion, photography, and design run throughout his work, merging with a reflective engagement with broader societal issues. Both conceptually and formally, Ehemann operates between the poles of destruction and reconfiguration. Many of his works begin with seemingly incidental gestures—crumpled sketches or fleeting moments captured on Polaroid. What might ordinarily be dismissed as waste becomes the foundation for carefully rendered, often highly enlarged compositions on wood or folded Plexiglas, which are subsequently reworked through painting.
In his sculptural practice, Ehemann likewise draws on transformed structures. Folded paper models, often inspired by origami, serve as templates for works that impress through their technical precision and formal complexity. The translation of fragile paper forms into durable materials imbues his work with a distinctive tension between ephemerality and permanence.
With numerous exhibitions both in Germany and abroad – including in Dallas and Tokyo – Ehemann has established himself on the international stage in a remarkably short period of time. His works appeal to a broad base of collectors and resonate with the zeitgeist of a generation searching for identity and orientation.
At the core of his practice are fundamental questions of self-conception and one’s place within society: Who are we? What shapes our perception? And how can we cultivate a more conscious relationship with the world around us? This thematic depth is paired with a pronounced curiosity and a persistent drive for insight – qualities that continue to define Ehemann’s artistic work.
