Renata
Tumarova

Renata Tumarova’s painting is shaped by a central guiding motif: an artistic inquiry into freedom – as a bodily experience, a mode of perception, and an aesthetic principle. Her works unfold within the tension between figurative representation and painterly dissolution, aiming less to depict reality than to evoke its sensory and emotional experience.

Trained in the classical academic tradition of Russian art, Tumarova gradually developed an increasingly free and intuitive visual language over the course of her artistic career. The technical rigor of her early training remains consistently present, yet it recedes behind an open, process-driven approach to color, composition, and subject matter. In place of detailed preparatory drawings, she works directly on the canvas, lending her paintings a sense of spontaneity, dynamism, and strong painterly presence.

In terms of subject matter, Tumarova often focuses on scenes in and around water: children, adolescents, and adults who move playfully and fluidly through the pictorial space, appearing almost weightless. These figures are deliberately rendered as anonymous, rarely shown frontally, and not individualized. For that very reason, they function less as portraits than as stand-ins for a shared, collective experience. In Tumarova’s work, the human body becomes a vehicle for movement, rhythm, and spatial energy – rather than a bearer of individual psychology.

Central to the impact of her paintings is the distinctive relationship between figure, space, and viewer. Tumarova partially dissolves classical points of orientation such as horizon lines or clearly defined spatial depth – and often situates the viewer within the scene itself. The pictorial space is not observed from a distance but experienced physically: as immersion, resonance, and movement. This immersive quality is further intensified by her use of light reflections, splashes, dabs of color, and painterly concentrations that extend beyond the depicted scene and seemingly expand the spatial field.

Color plays a central, structuring role in her work. Vivid blues, reds, and oranges, strong contrasts, and bright highlights create an interplay between density and transparency. In some paintings, the effect of her oil technique approaches that of watercolor, allowing water to be experienced not merely as a depicted element but as an atmospheric presence. The transition from figuration to abstraction remains fluid and deliberately open.

In more recent bodies of work, Tumarova pushes this approach further, as reflections, points of light, and fragmented forms increasingly dematerialize the subject. The gaze loses its fixed points of reference; orientation emerges less through objects than through painterly movement and chromatic resonance. The artist’s point of view becomes that of the viewer – a shift in perspective that foregrounds the act of seeing itself.

Tumarova’s art is not concerned with representing freedom in a political or narrative sense, but rather with inviting a particular state: freedom as a moment, as a mode of perception, as a temporary suspension of control and expectation. Her paintings are conceived to engage viewers not only visually but emotionally, opening up experiential spaces that resist full definition or resolution. It is precisely in this openness that their lasting impact resides.

Renata Tumarova’s painting thus functions less as a statement than as an invitation – an invitation to participate, to situate oneself, and to experience freedom through the medium of color.
